A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.

Market Movement in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been taken into custody.

One account, which joined the platform recently and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

But the odds had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in positions right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a trade based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also made significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A bill presented on the start of the week would prevent public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
