Fierce Winds Cause Numerous Homes Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents urged to stay indoors as strong winds lash the country.

Intense gales hitting speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 properties lacking electricity and forced agencies to cancel in excess of 100 air travel services, based on regional news sources.

These gusts are influencing the entire southern region and lower areas of the northern region, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have announced rare red wind warnings - the top caution category - in core zones encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been urged to avoid going outside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for more electricity and network failures.

Broad Damage and Emergency Response

The power cut appears to be affecting homes mainly in the southern region, although authorities say that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Local media have stated that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the winds.

Within the capital, a man was killed after being impacted by a wooden fragment at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was pushed toward approaching vehicles on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services in and out of the metropolis have been halted as a result of the gusts, while some roads and libraries are shut down.

At the same time authorities in Canterbury have declared a crisis declaration, to facilitate recovery activities.

Strike Action Amid Severe Weather

These intense gusts on this day come as many of teachers, doctors and other public workers are engaged in what has been described as a "major walkout", demanding improved salaries and workplace environments.

However the extreme weather has pressured them to modify some of their plans, with several external protests relocated inside or cancelled.

Like conditions are also sweeping Australia, bringing a period of extreme heat to the nation's interior regions.

Authorities have declared burning restrictions for concern about wildfires.
