The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
