One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more material, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year break that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with some instead handling more material or more to compensate for time.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each year, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
