Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal estimates Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to corporate structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake approximately five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and CEO if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the company.

An official representative said: "We will be making no comment on this. The governance of the team will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

The deal signifies a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise reflects the expansion in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned over $630m (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix this year and is fourth in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight consecutive team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
